Honda wants hybrids to generate 10 percent of global sales

Honda president Takeo Fukui has announced that within two years, two new hybrids will enter production — what it is calling a Global Hybrid, and a sports hybrid based on the CR-Z concept shown in October at Tokyo show. Fukui said that with the addition of these two models to Honda’s lineup, hybrid vehicles are expected to account for some 10 percent of the automaker’s global sales.

U.S. debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Meanwhile, the Global Hybrid model will debut in 2009 and will feature a new lightweight and compact integrated motor assist (IMA) system. The hybrid will also be targeted to a more affordable market segment, making cost reduction a key priority. Honda expects to sell 200,000 examples of its Global Hybrid annually.
