Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Junk

Here’s another gem via our buddy Vince Taliano at the Cadillac & LaSalle Club’s Potomac Region:

Each May, the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) in Baltimore hosts the East Coast Kinetic Sculpture Race Championship on the shore of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The eight-hour race covers 15 miles–mostly on pavement, but additionally includes a trip into the Baltimore Harbor. For the 2006 race, Mark Wamaling and Jeff Colburn made a plaster cast of the front & rear ends of a ‘67 Cadillac owned by Jeff’s neighbor, the sample for a sculpture they named Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Junk.

The body of the Cadillac was made of cardboard by steel wire to keep weight to a minimum. For the race, they dressed

as Elvis impersonators. For finishing right in the middle of the race, they took domestic the 2006 Grand Mediocre East Coast Champion award, and became eligible to take their tiki-festooned convertible to the World Championship Kinetic Sculpture Race in Arcata, California. They recycled the bicycle and pontoons for that year’s sculpture (Attack of the Sculpturians, which was fastest overall). Currently, the Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Junk is hanging from the wall in their shop.
