Hyundai i-Blue and Hyundai Veloster

Hyundai does like a good show concept.

In Paris final year, the Korean manufacturer showed off the HED-4 concept, and before that we saw the Genus - in fact, there’s been a near-continuous run of so-called Hyundai California Design studies running all the way to 1992.

Only problem is, Hyundai’s not so good at turning said concepts into actual cars. Just about never, in fact.
But, undeterred by such a low success rate, Hyundai has decided to up the ante in Frankfurt that year by unveiling not one but two new concepts.
In the green (well, silver actually) corner is the i-Blue, a hydrogen electric concept that uses Hyundai’s third-generation experimental fuel cell technology.
Atop the vapour-emitting fuel cells sits a crossover body - half SUV, half estate - which could (and we repeat could) point to future Hyundai styling cues. It probably won’t, though.
In the red

corner sits the Veloster, a two-plus-two coupe with a panoramic roof that shares much of its roofline with the Nissan Mixim concept we saw final week. No scissor doors here, though.

The name Veloster, in case you were wondering (which you probably weren’t) is an amalgamation of the words ‘Velociraptor’ and ‘Hamster’. Not really. It’s an amalgamation of the worlds ‘Velocity’ and ‘Roadster’ which, while less amusing, makes rather increasingly sense.
Hyundai will additionally reveal the estate version its new i30 family car in Frankfurt. We’ve been impressed - in a ‘nodding sagely rather than jumping up and down’ sort of way - with the i30 already, and the estate should be, erm, bigger. And probably fairly good.
And at least it’s already in production.
