New Roof Strength Porposal Offers Half a Solution

Almost 10,000 Americans die in rollover crashes every year, yet the regulations for roof strength haven’t changed since 1971. nowadays the NHTSA put a new proposal on the table. In all likelihood, it won’t save many lives and it will only anger automakers and safety advocates alike.

The current standard requires a vehicle to resist one and a half times its weight on one side of the vehicle. The new proposal requires it to resist two and a half times its weight on both sides of the vehicle.

Yet rollovers are violent incidents in which many dynamic forces

come into play. Safety advocates had hoped that the new standard would include actual rollover examining. Automakers have faraway insisted that there’s no consistent way to experiment dynamic rollovers considering they can be caused by many things. plus, few public are killed by crushed roofs in rollovers. More often, they were ejected considering they weren’t wearing seat belts.
